Get to Know CRäKN: Meet Matt Bertelsen

This week, we continue our “Get to know” series, where we give you an introduction to one of our team members.

This week we interviewed Matt Bertelsen, a software developer we’re proud to have as a part of our team. Keep reading to hear what countries he’s lived in while working for CRäKN—and the surprising two tools he can’t live without.

Q: What’s your role with CRäKN?

Matt Bertelsen: I’m a software developer. I work on both the user interface and the server side of the application. About 95% of my time is spent digging through code and creating new features in the application. But I’ve also had the chance to work on some tooling, data wrangling, and documentation/policy stuff.

Q: What’s your background prior to working for CRäKN?

Matt Bertelsen: During my university years, I studied mainly business and physics. I was taking some development classes on the side for fun, and then I was recommended for an apprenticeship at a software company. I ended up doing contracting work for them in between my studies.

Right before I stumbled upon CRäKN, while working on earning several certifications, I was getting into data analysis and machine learning. I enjoy building things, and software development is my best tool in that regard, so it seems like I keep falling back into this area.

Q: And where are you working from currently?

Matt Bertelsen: “From the road” is the best answer I can give to that. At the moment I’m in Montreal, but before this, I was in Spain and Slovenia. Next, I’m visiting Costa Rica (which used to be my home) for awhile, and then back to Slovenia and Denmark probably.

Q: CRäKN is helping to make work more streamlined and simple for funeral directors. What are the tools you are using right now that help you simplify your work?

Matt Bertelsen: We use GitHub, Zube, Codeship, and others, which are basically the “CRäKNs” of the software development world. They let us shift our focus and energy towards the parts of our job that make our product unique and valuable.

Q: What’s your best time-saving trick?

Matt Bertelsen: While I did have a “productivity hack” phase, now my favorite time-saving trick is to avoid tasks I would want to save time on. Shortcuts usually come at the expense of quality, and I try to spend as much of my time as possible doing things that require quality. This idea is probably related in some way to Eisenhower’s Matrix and/or Pareto’s Principle.

Q: What’s the best part of your role right now at CräKN?

Matt Bertelsen: The diversity of tasks I’ve been involved in. Being able to switch mental gears once in a while and learn new things really keeps work enjoyable.

Q: Besides your phone and computer, what is one tool or gadget you can’t live without?

Matt Bertelsen: I live out of carry-on luggage, so those are the only two tools I can live with. But they’re all I need anyway.

Q: Last question: What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?

Matt Bertelsen: Working with the new members of the team. The recent growth of the company has brought on some great people, and I think work will become even more interesting and engaging as we can take on bigger challenges.
