Getting to Know the CRäKN Team

This week we continue our “Get to know the CRäKN team” Q&A series with a software developer on the team, Michael Casciato. (You can see one of our first Q&A sessions with CRäKN’s Founder and CEO, Scott Mindrum, here.)
Q: What’s your role with CRäKN?
My official title is Software Developer. Typically, I work on the behind the scenes aspect of the codebase, making sure any bugs are quickly resolved as well as assisting in the creation of new features. I occasionally assist in more customer-facing, front end features, too.
I like being able to bounce back and forth from the back end to the front end. It keeps me fresh on the different technologies and also fights the stagnation and repetition that can come with doing the same thing day in and day out.
Q: CRäKN is helping to make work more streamlined and simple for funeral directors. What are the tools you are using right now that help you simplify your work and/or life?
I love the note-taking app called Quiver for Mac. It takes the standard Notes app to the next level. You have much more flexibility in the formatting of notes, specifically being able to format notes in the programming language of your choice, making it much more efficient in my opinion. You can also easily export the notes to PDF or toggle a presentation mode if needed. Quiver has really helped me keep track of important tasks and goals, and I highly recommend it!
Another app I love the text editor called Atom. It’s relatively new (the last few years), but it’s taken the scene by storm. It’s highly customizable (notice the pattern in my apps of choice?). Atom was made by the people at GitHub, which is one of, if not the most popular site for cloud-based version control (managing the many versions and configuration of your software). In a nutshell, this means that it has fantastic integration with GitHub, allowing a developer to easily see which files have been changed and are ready to be pushed to the cloud. Anything that can simplify the experience is definitely a win.
Q: What might surprise CRäKN clients about you?
It may be surprising to hear that I also have experience in a completely different industry–higher education, specifically campus ministry. I received both a BA and MA in Theology from Xavier University in Cincinnati and spent 5 years in professional (non-ordained) ministry on college campuses.
Although I still have a strong passion for faith-formation, I reached a point where I needed a new challenge…and some more normal hours! Long nights are tough when you have a toddler! After some soul-searching, I turned to a passion of mine–technology. And now, here I am, and I couldn’t be happier!
Q: What’s the best part of your role right now at CRäKN?
In my opinion, the best part of my job is collaborating with my team. Everyone is very willing to lend a hand, which is great considering how new to the field I am. Even though I’ve only been here a month, I feel like I’ve known everyone for much longer.
Q: Last question: What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?
I’m most looking forward to expanding my knowledge both of the industry as well as my own particular skills. Working at a small company is the perfect opportunity to do this, since I’m able to explore outside of my day-to-day programming tasks.
