When you delegate, aim to give people ownership of the project or task whenever possible. That allows them to use their judgement and discretion to get the work done the right way. Trust them to do the work once they are shown how and given context…but also track them along the way.
Also be sure to set expectations, timelines, or other ways of holding someone accountable from the start. Over time, you may have less check-ins or structure with them, but at least start with multiple reviews and/or quality checks after you hand the work off.
Do your best to get to know your people so you can see their strengths, weaknesses, and what work they gravitate towards. You also want to know team members’ personal and professional goals, and how that relates to their current work capacity. That way, you can give them work that is best suited for them, no matter their current role and no matter what else is going on in their lives.
